Practicum Final

This semester throughout all of my practicum hours I have learn a lot more than I normally would in previous semesters. I believe that a big part of that is due to the campus channel being moved over to the studio. Justin Bivens was able to teach me many things about how the channel worked as well as learning everything it took to make a successful channel run. There are so many components that go in to making things run smoothly and it really does take a lot of work. For all the other majors around campus that say Communications is a joke, I would like to challenge them to work in the studio for a day and see fully understand what it takes.

Working with Wellness TV as well as the Southern Sports Network has been a great experience in seeing how a show gets put together and how the different roles played a part in making it all look its best. I have learned a lot with having to piece together packages for Wellness TV as well as running a show for the Southern Sports Network. I'm really glad I had had enough experience to step up in Wellness TV and get the show completed when Consuleo was gone for so long. With the skills I learned working with the Southern Sports network, I hope to continue to use them whether it be to help Meghan Bragg with Southern Talk or Anna Biernbaum with the FSC TV News.

This year, practicum as well as my other broadcast classes has taught me a lot more then I expected. In my opinion, I was able to be a successful broadcast major and experience everything that I should have in my first 2 years as a practicum student. I can't wait to see how much farther I will progress and where my career choice will lead me later in life.

I began realizing that I picked the right major and career path as soon as I got started in my classes freshman year, but this year has made me realize it even more. I'm glad I was able to experience everything that I did throughout this department and I hope to continue learning and growing as a broadcast major for the rest of my time here at Florida Southern.

4:30-8:30
Practicum had gotten out early so I headed over to the studio to wait for the sports show to start. Anna and I were bored and Bivens was already messing with the campus channel so we decided to ask him how exactly it works. We found some music CD's and he explained to us that they were for then the powerpoint runs but he never got around to uploading them all. We decided to help him out but had to wait till after the sports show. The sports show got started and I worked one of the camera's. We had one of the women's soccer players as the interviewee and she seemed a bit nervous. Once the show was over, Anna and I got right back to work with Bivens. We finished up the dozens of CD's that needed uploading, and he even took the time to show us the map of the school with a clear label of the campus channel.

Practicum Hours Oct 20-26

Wed Oct 20
3:00-3:30
Maggie, Krissy, and I were finally able to get our interview with the theater department for our costume package for wellness tv. When we got to the theater, a few of the majors had dressed up just for us because they knew we were coming to film them. We got Chelsea Canestraro to do the actual interview, along with shooting some b-roll of everyone dressed up and of the costume shop itself.

(2 hours)

Thurs Oct 21
5:45-6:15
I met Krissy and Maggie at Buckner Theater so that we could film Krissy's anchor standups. I had put them in charge of getting the camera out of the WTV office since I was in class all day. They had forgotten to grab the XLR chord so we had to use the wireless mic. I did a sound check to make sure that it would work and it did. Krissy was great at her standups and got them in just a few short tries.
(30 min)

6:30-8:30
Maggie and I went into the WTV office and uploaded the video that we had just shot. It was then that we realized that something had gone wrong with the audio and we would have to reshoot the standups. Edited together what we could, and figured out when we could do the new reporting. Krissy was not able to do it when Maggie and I were free so we came to the decision that I would be the new reporter and that the next time around Krissy would get her chance to make up for the technical errors. I recorded some voice overs and showed Maggie how to edit those in.
(2 hours)

Fri Oct 22
12:00-1:30

Once again we had another WTV meeting, even though Consuelo was unable to attend. Michael was supposed to lead the meeting for us, but he was running late. Consuelo called me right at 4:30 and asked how the meeting was going so far. She asked to be put on speaker phone and from there she lead the meeting. We ran it like any other meeting, asking the progress of each package. Consuelo reminded us of our deadlines and we all promised her that we would meet them. After she hung up, I took the lead and answered any questions that people had about their packages. I made sure that everyone was doing well and understood everything that Consuelo had said over the phone.

Practicum Midterm

This year in practicum I haven't really learned anything new. It has all been review for me and all the new things that I have learned happen in my Intro to Broadcast Journalism class. I was however given the opportunity to film my first volleyball game with the help of John Luti. That was an experience that took some getting use to. It's hard to follow where exactly the ball is going when it's moving so fast and you can only see it through the tiny screen on the camera. I was able to get the hang of it quickly though. I learned that you have to pay attention 100% and you should know how to multi-task so you can let your partner know what plays to write down and the time on the video.

A lot of the time in practicum so far this year I spent with Wellness TV. I was able to help and guide the new students with packages so that one day they are able to do one on their own. I learned more on how to use Final Cut Pro in class, so that should help me greatly with WTV.

I know that being a junior I have learned a fair amount of things that will help me later on in my career, but I also know that I have so much more to learn in these next 2 years at Florida Southern as well as when I get into the broadcasting field.

Practicum Hours Sept 15-21

Wed Sept 15
4:45-5:00
Another SSN meeting was held today. John and Kevin went over what needed to be done as far as shootings. They gave us a list of events and split us up into groups depending on what we were interested in filming.
(15 min)

Wed Sept 15
7:00-9:00
I had volunteered to be at the volleyball game today. John was there to help us. I was given the opportunity to both shoot and record hard copy the stats of the game. Filming took some getting use to because you never knew what was going to happen next so you always had to be paying attention. Writing the stats was a little easier because the photographer is always telling you exactly what to write according to how they saw it on the camera.
(2 hours)

Tues Sept 21
1:00-2:00
Consuelo asked me for some help on a package that she was putting together. We went around campus and shot some b-roll and got an interview in. She also showed me a little more of how to edit.

Practicum hours Aug 25-31

Monday August 30
4:30-5:00

Consuelo held the first Wellness TV meeting of the year. We had a great turnout. Consuelo showed us the very first episode from 2007 when Ryan was the producer, and then the last episode from last semester. She explained more about what the show is about and answered any questions that people had. We went around the room and introduced ourselves and the former people announced that they had worked with the show before so that the new members would know who to go to if they ever have a question or a problem.
